tw: visibility // zendaya’s new movie is literally just her staring at a wall for two hours and i am finally feeling seen
the cinematic world is finally healing because we've stopped pretending that acting is anything other than emotional labor.

trigger warning: plot points, character arcs, and the concept of "pacing" (literal assault)
i literally cannot even begin to describe the level of relief i felt walking into the theater for zendaya’s new film *stillness*. for too long, the entertainment industry has been gaslighting us into believing that movies need things like "conflict" or "dialogue." honestly? conflict is just a fancy word for toxic dynamics and dialogue is basically just an email in real-time. both are literal violence against my nervous system.
the movie is exactly what it says on the tin: two hours of zendaya sitting in a beige room, staring at a neutral-toned wall. there is no script. there is no plot. there is simply... existence. i spent the first forty minutes just sobbing because the lack of narrative tension allowed me to finally stop pretending that i have the capacity to care about things. seeing her refuse to "perform" or "engage" was the most radical act of self-care i've witnessed since i decided to go no-contact with my alarm clock.
i think we need to talk about how "acting" has always been a tool of the capitalist machine to glamorize hard work (tw: labor). usually, actors have to *do* things—they cry, they scream, they chase people. but zendaya is finally honoring our collective burnout by simply rotting in 4k. it’s basically high-art bed-rotting and i feel like my soul is finally being regulated. if you're feeling overwhelmed by the toxicity of the economy or the sheer aggression of a "to-do" list, this movie is the only safe space left in physical reality.
i actually wore my favorite weighted blanket to the screening because the thought of sitting in a theater chair without sensory compression felt like a hate crime. if you guys want to protect your peace while contemplating the void, you can find the exact same lavender-scented anxiety blanket i use on my amazon storefront (link in bio, please don't email me about it, that's too much).
overall, *stillness* is a total vibe. it’s giving "i have zero bandwidth for this reality" and it’s so valid. i hope the oscars just give her the award now so she doesn't have to go through the labor of an awards ceremony, which would be a total violation of her boundaries.
